Arthritis

Arthritis is a debilitating disease for over 50 million Americans. The Centers for Disease Control has shown that half of us will have knee arthritis by the time we are 85, and a quarter of us will develop hip arthritis. The good news is that you don’t have to live with arthritis pain or take constant medication! The right physical therapy can make all the difference.

Arthritis is usually the result of wear and tear of the cartilage of the joints. Moving inefficiently will increase this wear and tear and is a significant differentiator between those who get arthritis and those who don’t. Arthritis becomes painful when cartilage is shaved off into the joint space causing painful inflammation and when there isn’t enough cartilage to cushion the forces passing through the joint.

Arthritis is made even worse by tissues around the joint tightening, weakening of muscles that support the joint, and the resulting limited range of motion contributing to even less efficient movement. This turns arthritis into a vicious cycle of people moving less because of pain, and when they do move it’s not efficient and makes the arthritis pain worse, so then they stop moving again.

Physical therapy will help you break the cycle! Don’t let arthritis slow you down. If you are suffering from arthritis, PT can change your life.

In physical therapy we focus on the following:

  • Restoring natural pain-free range of motion to your joints

  • Improving muscular activation and strength to support your joints

  • Enhancing movement mechanics and function

  • Teaching you how to move efficiently to protect your joints from further damage
